  1. You asked for it<\/em>. The people want God\u2019s revelation, but the meaning of experiencing revelation is hard – impossible to withstand: \u201cBut who can endure the day of his coming, and who can hold out when he appears? For he is like a smelter\u2019s fire and like fuller\u2019s lye\u201d (verse 2). It is reminiscent of what Amos replied to the people: \u201cAh, you who wish For the day of the LORD! Why should you want The day of the LORD? It shall be darkness, not light!\u201d (Amos 5:18).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. What does God want? The<\/em> call to repentance is shared by both the First Temple prophets and the Second Temple prophets. But the answer to the question of \u201cWhat does God want\u201d and what the people need to mend is different. For the First Temple prophets, the demand is moral and social reform, while for the Second Temple ones, it is the Temple and the worship of God that is central.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. God-fearers.<\/em> Those who revere the Lord were a group, with a self-awareness of being a group: \u201cIn this vein have those who revere the LORD been talking to one another…\u201d (verse 16). Later on in Second Temple times there were not a few groups who saw themselves as \u201cSons of Light\u201d versus \u201cSons of Darkness,\u201d as more vs. less righteous. Is Malachi\u2019s prophecy the beginning of these sects?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Angels and messengers in Malachi<\/em>. Verse 1 announces: \u201cBehold, I am sending My messenger\u2026 the angel of the covenant that you desire\u2026\u201d before the revelation. Verse 23 tells of the coming of Elijah the prophet before the day of the Lord. In chapter 2 we learned that a priest, when he was doing what he was supposed to, was the \u201cmessenger of the LORD of Hosts.\u201d And the headline of the whole book in 1:1 says that the prophecy is being transmitted through <\/span>Malachi<\/span><\/em>\/<\/span><\/i>\u201dmy messenger.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Elijah the prophet<\/em>. Elijah the prophet, who we met 263 chapters ago in the book of Kings (from 1 Kings 17), will come on a special mission to connect children to their parents, and the parents to their parent in heaven. Why specifically him? Perhaps because he never died, but ascended to heaven in a chariot of fire – thus he can return from there. And note the difference between his activities during Ahab\u2019s reign, and his new purported task.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Chazak<\/em>! A big chazak<\/em> – this is the end of the 2nd third of the Bible – Prophets. On to the Writings – and Psalms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
