  1. Covenant.<\/em> The covenant is a central theme of the chapter. The covenant between God and the tribe of priests, the Levites, \u201cI had with him a covenant of life and well-being,\u201d a covenant that the priests desecrated with their behavior. And \u201cthe covenant of our ancestors\u201d – that the Israelites are desecrating, when they transgress the covenant with their wives.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. New leadership<\/em>. The ideal priest is an ambassador of God on earth. \u201cFor the lips of a priest guard knowledge, And men seek rulings from his mouth; For he is a messenger of the LORD of Hosts\u201d (verse 7). Think about this from a historical perspective. Malachi is the last of the prophets. The period is the beginning of Second Temple times. The value of \u201cTorah\u201d as a force that shapes identity is rising, and the responsibility of those who pass it on to the spiritual leadership is also growing.,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Covering the altar with tears<\/em>. Divorce is of course permissible according to Biblical law, but Malachi lets us know, with his painful words, what he thinks about it.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Of marriage and divorce<\/em>. The issue of marriage to foreign women greatly occupied Ezra and Nehemiah, who were active during the period of the \u201cReturn to Zion\u201d in Jerusalem, and endeavored to get Judan men to divorce their foreign-born wives. What\u2019s the connection between that activity and the prophecy here: is Malachi relating to the same issue, or are these two separate
