And what does the one seek?&#8211;seed of God. And you should guard yourselves with your spirit and not betray the wife of your youth.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire sentence is obscure. Some interpreters think that \u201cone\u201d refers to God, but that seems strained. The understanding reflected in this translation is: although many among you have betrayed your spouses by divorcing them (and perhaps taking foreign women as mates), there is one &#8211; implicitly, a few &#8211; among you of \u201cexceeding spirit\u201d who does the right thing. (The word \u201cright\u201d has been added speculatively, in brackets.) What this person seeks is the \u201cseed of God,\u201d which would be pure Israelite offspring. If in fact this whole passage is addressed to the priests, it may be that Malachi objects only to divorce among priests, not to divorce in general.
