  1. Name – or job<\/em>? Is \u201cMalachi\u201d the surname of the prophet, or more his job description – <\/span>malach sheli<\/span><\/em>, \u201cMy messenger\u201d thus, a \u201cmessenger of God,\u201d and the book keeps him anonymous? Both are possibilities within the text.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Right, guvn\u2019r<\/em>! In verse 8 there appears a <\/span>pechah<\/span><\/em>, \u201cgovernor\u201d – the local ruler representing the Persian empire.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Edom – the never ending story<\/em>. Beginning with the story of the relationship between Jacob and Esau (Gen 25),via the stories of the book of Kings, and up until the prophecies of calamity about Edom in the prophets (see e.g., the book of Ovadiah, whose entire book deals with Edom). Edom is the sibling with whom the rivalry never ceases, or steps down from the stage of history. This is perhaps one of the reasons why the commentators created a connection between Christianity and Edom.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Critique of the sacrificial cult<\/em>. The prophets of First Temple times also expressed criticism of the sacrifices, claiming that they were not desired by God. The reason, though, was different, representing an entirely different approach. \u201c\u2018What need have I of all your sacrifices?, Says the LORD.\u2019 Even if they are perfect and unblemished.\u00a0 \u201c\u2018I am sated with burnt offerings of rams, And suet of fatlings, And blood of bulls; And I have no delight In lambs and he-goats.\u2019\u201d If there\u2019s no morality, \u201cThough you pray at length, I will not listen. Your hands are stained with crime…\u201d But with Malachi the reason was that the sacrifices themselves were not up to snuff – either stolen, lame or sick. It\u2019s that sort of sacrifice that God doesn\u2019t want.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. \u201cVe\u2019amartem<\/em>\u201d – say\/ask. The prophet is a man of words. In this chapter you\u2019ll find four instances of the verb \u201cve\u2019amartem<\/em>\u201d (translated as ask or say), and also other forms of the same root. This atmosphere of discourse also characterizes the rest of the book.
