This chapter of Zecharia is read as the haftarah on the first day of Sukkot. It is evident from the text why that is so. In 14:16-19, Zecharia discusses the end of days’ Sukkot festival for the nations of the world. The significance of Sukkot is also referenced in Amos 9:4: “On that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David.”\u00a0 Passover is the holiday that is the connection between God and his people; the birth of the nation of Israel. It is Sukkot that is the holiday for all the nations (for an explanation of this difference <\/span>see here<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

The Torah reading on the holiday of Sukkot also brings out this theme. Each day we read the list of the sacrifices from Numbers 29. The total number of sacrifices brought on the holiday is 70. One reason given for the specifically 70 sacrifices is to match the traditional number of the nations of the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, there will remain unrepentant non-Israelites, enemies of this vision. In verse 12, the prophet describes the plague that will befall the enemies of Israel “each one’s flesh will melt away while he is standing on his feet, each one’s eye will melt away in the sockets and each one’s tongues will melt away in their mouths”. This verse directly matches the death that befalls the Nazi officers who open the Ark of the Covenant at the end of <\/span>Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/span><\/em>. Is it possible this was Steven Spielberg’s favorite description of a divine punishment for the enemies of Israel?<\/span><\/p>\n
