Our chapter begins with Zechariah\u2019s vision of the future Jerusalem: \u201cOn that day a source shall be opened to the House of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse them of sin and impurity\u201d. Zechariah later expands on this vision: \u201cOn that day, fresh water shall flow from Jerusalem, part of it to the Eastern Sea [the Dead Sea] and part to the Western Sea [the Mediterranean], throughout the summer and winter\u201d (14:8). Waters issuing from Jerusalem in the future are also described in Ezekiel 47:1-12, Joel 4:18 and Psalms 46:4.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 19th century Biblical commentator,<\/span> Malbim on Zechariah 13:1<\/span><\/a> provides an extensive explanation of this opening verse:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn that day a source [<\/span>maqor<\/span><\/em>] shall be opened\u201d. According to the plain meaning [<\/span>pshat<\/span><\/em>], this is said because at this time no springs are found within Jerusalem. But then (\u201cOn that day\u201d \u2013 i.e. at the End of Days) a source of living water [<\/span>maqor mayyim hayyim<\/span><\/em>] will be opened that will be reserved for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, supplying purifying waters for cleansing from sin, waters to remove impurity [<\/span>mey niddah<\/span><\/em>] and waters [for mixing with the] ashes [in the purification rite of the] Red Heifer (see Numbers 19).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ezekiel (47:1-12) already saw this in a prophetic vision when he envisioned a great stream issuing from the Holy of Holies, spreading out to the Eastern and Western Seas. And similarly, Zechariah prophesied: \u201cOn that day, fresh water shall flow from Jerusalem, part of it to the Eastern Sea and part to the Western Sea, throughout the summer and winter\u201d (14:8). This will be after the final war of Gog and Magog when the stream will overflow with so much abundance. But after the first war of Gog and Magog (see Ezek. chapter 38)\u2026the waters will not yet spread outwards and will be only for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

This image may be seen as a metaphoric representation of the spreading forth of the waters of knowledge and the stream of Torah and faith, which are compared to water\u2026the waters of knowledge will begin to spread out from\u00a0 the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and they will remove the impurity of foolishness, stupidity, false belief and every trace of idolatry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Zechariah goes on to prophesy: \u201cOn that day, too\u2014declares the Lord of Hosts\u2014I will erase the very names of the idols from the land. They shall not be uttered any more\u2026\u201d (13:2). This is an explanation of the faithful waters that flow from the welling up of wisdom and holy consciousness. Indeed, Zechariah prophecies further: \u201cIn that day, fresh water shall flow from Jerusalem, part of it to the Eastern Sea and part to the Western Sea, throughout the summer and winter. And the Lord shall be king over all the earth. On that day there shall be one Lord with one name\u201d
