Many nations will join in besieging her, but she will emerge unscathed (1-9). Afterwards, the war\u2019s casualties will be lamented, while the city\u2019s inhabitants will be purified (10-13:1). One verse that is particularly striking due to its rich, yet enigmatic, literary imagery, is v.11: \u201cIn that day, the wailing in Jerusalem shall be as great as the wailing at [or \u201cfor\u201d] Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Megiddon looks like Megiddo, a formerly Canaanite fortress city guarding the entrance to Wadi Ara and overlooking the Jezreel Valley that became a royal city in the northern Kingdom of Israel. In 609 BCE, the Egyptians (under Pharaoh Necho) captured Megiddo on their way to Carcemish to join their Assyrian allies against the up-and-coming Babylonians, in which battle the Judean King Josiah was killed (2 Kings 23:29, 2 Chronicles 35:20-27). Hadad-rimmon makes no other appearance in Tanakh, either as two hyphenated words, or, as some medieval texts have it (see Minchat Shai), as a single word Hadadrimmon. Hadad, alone, however, appears in the Edomite king list (Gen.36:35-36), again as an Edomite in 1 Kings 11, and as a component of the name of an Aramean king, Ben Hadad (1 Kings 20, 2 Kings 8).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra simply said: \u201cA lament over a great man who lived in the time of the ancients,\u201d and Radak similarly wrote: \u201cHe was known to them, although there is no trace of it in Scripture.\u201d The Aramaic Targum Yonatan, relying on some of the earlier biblical references we have cited, treated both Hadad-rimmon and Megiddon homiletically (Cf. BT Moed Katan 28b).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that time, the lament in Jerusalem will be greater than the lament over [King] Ahab son of Omri, who was slain by Hadadrimmon ben Tabrimon [king of Damascus], and the lament over Josiah son of Amon, who was slain by Pharaoh Necho in the Valley of Megiddo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>image: Aerial view
