  1. Rhyming prophesying.<\/em> Verse 4: \u201cpanic\u2026 madness\u2026. blindness\u201d in Hebrew are <\/span>timahon, shigaon, ivaron<\/span><\/i>. Together with the names Hadad-rimmon and Megiddon, they all rhyme, and invite midrashic connections.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Judah and Jerusalem<\/em>. Unification or tension? Reading between the lines, there is a complex relationship between the clans of Judah and the House of David in Jerusalem. On the one hand, the clans of Judah reinforce Jerusalem, and work for its safety and protection (verses 5-6). On the other, a delicate balance needs to be preserved: \u201cThe LORD will give victory to the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the House of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not be too great for Judah\u201d (verse 7).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The riddle of Hadad-rimmon<\/em>. Who is Hadad-rimmon, and what were the circumstances of his death. Hadad-rimmon is the name of an Aramean god, and there are also Aramean kings called by that name. The best known person in Tanach who died at Megido was King Josaiah. These are the two central directions for solving the puzzle: cultic mourning practices, and national trauma.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Together, or separately?<\/em> The mourning is shared by all, but is conducted entirely separately. Each family by itself, and even in a given family – women and men separately. Why? Does this practice somehow express enforcing class divisions in Jerusalem? Or reflects other social structures? Or is there a message here for us?<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Who is the lamenting for<\/em>? The prophecy goes on at length about the lamenting, the eulogizing, but does not go into the identity of the dead, or the circumstances of their death. Commentators suggest a variety of answers: the casualties of Israel, from attacks of the nations; the dead of internal struggles in Judah (if so the sorrow of the lament is joined by regret for their deaths). Or the death of an important leader – perhaps even the messiah? By the way, thousands of years after Zechariah, Rav Kook famously eulogized Herzl<\/span><\/a> with an extended <\/span>derasha<\/span><\/i> on these verses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
