  1. Shepherds of Israel<\/em>. The prophecy of Zechariah joins together with other prophecies that refer to leaders as the shepherds of Israel. For instance, Ezekiel 34 (75 chapters ago).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The stick and the carrot<\/em>. The names of the prophet\u2019s staffs for herding the sheep, <\/span>No’am<\/span><\/em>, “Favor,” and <\/span>Chovlim<\/span><\/em>, ‘bands that bind’ \u2013 hence “Unity” \u2013 but which can destroy, sound like Zechariah’s version of the carrot and the stick. There is no further explanation in the prophecy, but raises questions regarding leadership and its failures.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Now that\u2019s how you (don\u2019t) shepherd.<\/em> The problematic acts of the shepherd teach by negative example what is expected of a good shepherd: to take care of the weakest sheep in the flock; to make sure that they all receive food; to plan for the economic future of the flock (which of the flock is important for the flock\u2019s future?), and not to exploit resources for the sole good of the shepherd.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. What\u2019s the answer?<\/em> Zechariah\u2019s symbolic actions, and his prophecies, leave us with many hints but no definitive solution. Who is the bad shepherd? Who are \u201cthe three shepherds\u201d who all died in one month? What are the historical events that are symbolized by the breaking of the each of the staffs? What\u2019s the connection between the separation of Judah and Israel, to the period of Zecharia? Some commentators suggest answers, based on sources from First and Second Temple times.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
