Perhaps this is intended as an image of conquest&#8211;the troops stomp through the streets of the conquered city, overwhelming all that stands in their ways. It is also possible that an object of the verb has dropped out (the literal sense of the Hebrew is \u201cin the mud of the streets\u201d) and that the original text reads: \u201ctrampling <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the slain<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the mud of the streets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W.
