That is followed by a prophecy about the righteous king who was to come to Zion (9-10), a call to the dispersed of Israel to return (11-15), and concludes with a future blessing of the people and its land (16 ff.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 1 stipulates: \u201cThe word of the Lord: He will reside in the land of Hadrach and Damascus.\u201d Since this is the sole appearance of the word Hadrach in Tanakh, it drew several speculative interpretations, mostly contextual, such as that of Ibn Ezra: &#8220;It is the name of an Aramean kingdom or ruler.\u201d Eliezer of Beaugency offered a more original interpretation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears that the entire context is addressing the future expansion of the boundaries of the land. We find it, similarly, in Ezekiel [47:17-18], that Damascus and Hamath would belong to Israel. [Ezekiel also mentioned] Havran, which is Hadrach, as there are many instances in which names change, such as Ein Harod (Judges 7:1) becoming Ein Dor (Psalms 83:11), and many other such examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More engaging, however, is Rashi, who cited a midrashic passage that appears\u2014with slight variation\u2014in both Pesikta d\u2019Rav Kahana and Yalkut Shim`oni:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yehudah sermonized: [Hadrach] is the Messiah, who is sharp (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) towards the idolaters but soft (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) towards Israel. R. Yossi the Damascene said to him: Yehudah, how long will you continue to pervert Scripture? I invoke heaven and earth that I come from Damascus and there is a place there named Hadrach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, modern scholarship seems to have caught up to R. Yossi. The \u201cHebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament\u201d (aka: Brown, Driver, Briggs) identifies Hadrach with Assyrian <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u1e2aatarakka, \u1e2aatari(k)ka<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a district near Damascus and Hamath<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:
