While the new Temple was nearly rebuilt and sacrifices were being offered, suggesting that the time to mourn had passed, several of the accompanying prophecies of restoration\u2014such as the ingathering of the exiles and renewal of the Davidic monarchy\u2014had not yet been fulfilled, implying that there was still cause to grieve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first answer that was revealed to Zachariah, in God\u2019s name, was: \u201cWhen you fasted and lamented in the fifth and seventh months all these seventy years, did you fast for my benefit?\u201d (7:5). The fast of the fifth month refers to Tish`a b\u2019Av, the fifth month after Nisan. Two months thereafter is Tishrei, and the fast of the seventh month is our Tzom Gedaliah, commemorating the assassination of the man who was to be the leader of the remnant that survived the destruction. God was speaking sarcastically, as it were, asking, rhetorically, whether the people who had observed those fast days thought that He had requested it or required it\u2014which, of course, He had done neither.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having detoured, thereafter (8:1-17), into a prophecy on the restoration of the Divine Presence to Jerusalem and that city\u2019s impending contentment, the prophet then made an astonishing declaration:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus said the LORD of Hosts: \u201cThe fast of the fourth month, the fast of the fifth month, the fast of the seventh month, and the fast of the tenth month shall become occasions for joy and gladness, happy festivals for the House of Judah; but you must love honesty and integrity.\u201d (19)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the fast days of the fifth and seventh months that we have just described, he has added those of the fourth and tenth months. On the 10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Tevet, Jerusalem first came under siege by the Babylonians (Jeremiah 52:4) and the fast day of the fourth month\u2014 Tammuz\u2014 marks the Babylonians\u2019 breach of the walls of Jerusalem on the 9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of that month (see Jeremiah 52:6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our fasting on the 17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Tammuz was set on account of the calendar of the Roman siege of the Second Temple, as was our fasting on the 9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Av\u2014 given that the First Temple was put to flames on the 7<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and continued burning through the 10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2 Kings 25:8, Jeremiah 52:12). The Fast of Gedaliah, too, was moved from the actual date of its occurrence, Rosh Hashanah (Jeremiah 41:1) to the third of Tishrei.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>image: Feast \/
