  1. Who\u2019s asking?<\/em> The identity of the members of the delegation has aroused great curiosity among commentators and researchers. What were their names? Where are they from? Are they exiles from Babylonia? Or Judans who stayed behind after the destruction?<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The fasts of the destruction.<\/em> In chapters 7-8 we are gradually exposed to the days they fasted on, in memory of the destruction. The delegation asks (verse 3): \u201cShall I weep and practice abstinence in the fifth month, as I have been doing all these years?\u201d – which is the month of Av, when the Temple was destroyed. In verse 5 it says: \u201cyou fasted and lamented in the fifth and seventh months all these seventy years,\u201d adding the fast of the Tishrei, which was when Gedalyahu ben Ahikam was killed. In the next chapter we will fill out the picture with \u201cthe fast of the fourth month\u2026 and the fast of the tenth month\u201d (8:19), which signify additional stages in the Babylonian destruction.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The former prophets<\/em>. Twice in the chapter Zechariah calls the prophets of the First Temple \u201cthe earlier prophets\u201d (verses 7 and 12), an epithet that shows there was awareness of a new era in prophecy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. More about fasts and fasters<\/em>. Preferring morality over cultic observance was characteristic of the earlier prophets. Note that this was also present in the prophecies of consolation from the beginning of the return to Zion, even regarding fasts. What does God want? Not a bodily fast but social justice: \u201cNo, this is the fast I desire: To unlock fetters of wickedness, And untie the cords of the yoke To let the oppressed go free; To break off every yoke. It is to share your bread with the hungry, And to take the wretched poor into your home; When you see the naked, to clothe him, And not to ignore your own kin\u201d (Is. 58:6-7).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
