A discussion\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our chapter begins with Zechariah\u2019s seventh vision: \u201cI looked up again, and I saw: Four chariots were coming out from between the two mountains; the mountains were of copper. The horses of the first chariot were red, the horses of the second chariot were black; the horses of the third chariot were white, and the horses of the fourth chariot were dappled gray. And I spoke up and asked the angel: \u2018What are those, my lord?\u2019 The angel replied: \u2018Those are the four winds of heaven coming out after presenting themselves to the Lord of all the earth. The one with the black horses is going out to the region of the north. The white ones have gone out to what is to the west of them. The spotted ones have gone out to the region of the south. And the dappled ones have gone out\u2026\u2019 (6:1-7).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Midrash preserved in Yalqut Shimoni to Zechariah 6:1 (Remez 574) interprets this vision as past, present and future oracles. The red horses represent the camp of Judah, of whom it is said: \u201cHis eyes are darker than wine\u201d (Genesis 49:12). And of the Judean David it is said: \u201cHe was red-cheeked, bright-eyed, and handsome\u201d (I Samuel 16:12). The black horses represent the camps of Reuben and Simeon\u2026The white horses represent the camps of Ephraim, Benjamin and Menasheh. And the \u201cdappled gray\u201d horses represent the camp of Dan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another interpretation is that these four chariots represent the four wicked Empires that ruled Israel, but eventually they fell at the hands of each other. The red horses are the Babylonian Empire. The black horses are the Empires of Persia and Media. The white horses are the Greek Empire. The \u201cdappled gray\u201d horses are the fourth Evil Empire, Rome, who proclaimed various \u201cdappled\u201d (i.e. multicolored) evil decrees against Israel. And the angel, who communicates God\u2019s word to Zechariah, represents Moses and Aaron who communicated the Torah to Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do we know that the four wicked Empires were God\u2019s agents? For when the horses of Zechariah\u2019s four chariots were chomping at the bit, the angel commanded them: \u201cStart out and range the earth!\u201d (6:7). And when they \u201cranged the earth\u201d they exiled Israel from its land. But if you come to keep the positive and the negative commandments, you shall \u201clie among the sheepfolds\u201d (Psalms 68:14). And \u201c\u2026the mountains were of copper\u201d (Zechariah 6:1) refers to the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah who were as strong as copper. Further proof that these two Jewish Kingdoms would again be as strong as copper is included in Moses\u2019 final blessing to Israel: \u201cMay your door bolts be iron and copper.
