  1. That\u2019s how you deal with evil<\/em>. The first vision deals with evildoers wherever they are, with the curse that is written on the scroll that leads to their downfall. The second vision with its two parts seeks to root out evil throughout the land\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Size<\/em>. Scrolls are written on parchment (animal hides). The size of the scroll that Zechariah sees \u2013 about 5 by 10 meters is huge, in fact completely unrealistic in terms of what can be produced from skins. The size isn’t really explained in the vision, nor the actual dimensions. There are those who point out the fact that these are the exact dimensions of the sanctuary (heichal<\/em>) of the Solomon’s Temple. Might there be a connection?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Ephah<\/em> and tzedek<\/em> (honesty, justice). In order to solve this prophetic riddle, we need to use biblical prooftexts and contexts. The measure or tub \u2013 ephah<\/em> \u2013 is often mentioned in the context of economic justice: “You shall have an honest balance, honest weights, an honest ephah<\/em>, and an honest hin<\/em>” (Lev 19:36). The ephah<\/em> in the vision is the seat of evil, perhaps because cheating in weights and measures is the embodiment of evil in daily reality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Shinar<\/em>. Shinar is the ancient name of Babylonia. Why would the permanent home of evil be built (in the vision) specifically there? Is it just to move it far away from Judah? Is it saying something about Babylonia? About the exiles in Babylonia? Or perhaps this is a story of a deep tikkun, repair? 544 chapters ago, at the dawn of human civilization, the tower of Babel was built, in “a valley in the land of Shinar.” As a punishment for its construction, humanity was scattered, “from there, across the face of the earth” (Gen. 11). Is this vision suggesting returning the evil to the place whence it came into the world with the spread of humanity, and to establish a new world order, without
