A chronological puzzle\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zechariah 3 and 4 (and some of 2) are read as the haftarah portion on the Shabbat of Hanukkah. The reference seems pretty straight forward as chapter 4 describes a vision of the menorah. When Hanukkah has two Sabbaths during the holiday, this portion is always read first. The haftarah portion for the second Sabbath is from 1 Kings 7, describing the dedication of the Temple by Solomon. This at first seems odd. Why would the first Sabbath reading be from a later prophet, and the second Sabbath reading be from the earlier story of the building of the first Temple? It would make sense to start with the older reading and then add on the second, later reading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is that the story of Hanukkah takes place during the Second Temple period, just like the book of Zechariah.
