Our chapter preserves the fifth vision of Zechariah. An angel shows the Prophet a lampstand all of gold on which are seven lamps (Zechariah 4:2). When Zechariah asks what these things mean, the angel replies with a memorable expression: \u201cNot by might and not by power, but by My spirit \u2013 said the Lord of Hosts\u201d (4:6). This verse has been the inspiration of song writers in our day. These include the baritone conductor Elliot Z. Levine,<\/span> who set to music the verse sung in Hebrew and English<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The renowned singer-songwriter, <\/span>Debbie Friedman<\/span><\/a>, who passed away in 2011, employs this verse in the refrain of a song, in which she elaborates on the passionately sung expression \u201c<\/span>Not by might and not by power<\/span><\/a>\u201d. This song may be seen as a modern musical midrash, the lyrics of which may be read as a poetic plea for peace:<\/span><\/p>\n

Not by might and not by power,<\/span>
\n<\/span>But by spirit alone,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Shall we all live in peace (x2)<\/span><\/p>\n

The children sing<\/span>
\n<\/span>The children dream<\/span>
\n<\/span>And their tears may fall<\/span>
\n<\/span>But we’ll hear them call<\/span><\/p>\n

And another song will rise<\/span>
\n<\/span>Another song will rise<\/span>
\n<\/span>Another song will rise!<\/span><\/p>\n

Not by might and not by power,<\/span>
\n<\/span>But by spirit alone,<\/span>
