  1. To the last detail<\/em>. In verse 2, Zechariah lays out the design of the menorah: \u201ca lampstand all of gold, with a bowl above it. The lamps on it are seven in number, and the lamps above it have seven pipes; and by it are two olive trees, one on the right of the bowl and one on its left.\u201d The vision doesn\u2019t interpret the details. Also – trying to sketch the menorah according to the description is no simple task. Is it rounded or straight? Is it the same as the design familiar from the Book of Exodus (ch. 37)? Commentators, archaeologists and others have various opinions on the matter.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. What don\u2019t you understand?<\/em> Twice the angel expresses amazement at that prophet\u2019s lack of understanding: \u201c\u2018Do you not know what those things mean?\u2019 asked the angel\u201d (verse 5, and again in 13).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A day of small beginnings. <\/em>There are those who \u201cscorn a day of small beginnings.\u201d There is disappointment in the very modest dimensions of the temple that is being built, especially in comparison to the luxurious temple that was destroyed. This disappointment is also reflected in the Haggai\u2019s prophecy from 5 chapters ago, who promised that: \u201cThe glory of this latter House shall be greater than that of the former one\u201d (Haggai 2:9).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The stone and its eyes<\/em>.In the previous chapter we encountered Joshua and the stone with seven eyes. In verse 10 today, we have the prophecy of \u201c the stone of distinction in the hand of Zerubbabel,\u201d which apparently is also connected to seven eyes: \u201cThose seven are the eyes of the LORD, ranging over the whole earth.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Zerubbabel and Joshua<\/em>. The previous vision dealt with the status of Joshua the priest, and mentioned \u201cBranch\u201d (<\/span>tsemach<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i>, the leader from the House of David. This vision addresses Zerubbabel, and apparently Joshua also makes an appearance as one of the two <\/span>bnei yitzhar<\/span><\/em> – \u201cthe two anointed dignitaries.\u201d What do the visions tell us about the two leaders? About their status? About how they fulfill their positions, and the relationship between them? The need to reinforce them means that there were difficulties.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. The menorah and olive branches<\/em>. If that sounds like a certain national symbol <\/span><\/a>– it\u2019s not by accident.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
