The second chapter of the Book of Zechariah includes this Prophet\u2019s second and third visions. In telling of his third vision, Zechariah relates: \u201cI saw a man holding a measuring line\u2026to measure Jerusalem\u201d. But an angel said to him: \u201cJerusalem shall be peopled as a city without walls, so many shall be the men and the cattle it contains. I Myself \u2013 declares the Lord \u2013 will be a wall of fire all around it, and I will be the glory within it\u201d (2:5-9).<\/span><\/p>\n

Midrash Pesiqta de-Rav Kahana 20:7 preserves an extensive rabbinic discussion of the future extent of the Holy City of Jerusalem. Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah began by asking how will Jerusalem be able to hold so many people? Rabbi Eleazar Ha-Moda\u2019i replied: In the future the Holy One, blessed be He, will say to Jerusalem: Extend yourself! Enlarge yourself! Receive your multitudes! [As it says] \u201cThe Lord will say [to Jerusalem]: Enlarge the site of your tent! Extend the size of your dwelling!\u201d (Isaiah 54:2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Yohanan added: In the future, Jerusalem will extend even to the gates of Damascus! What is the Scriptural proof? \u201cIn the land of Hadrakh, and Damascus shall be His resting place\u201d (Zech. 9:1)… This verse suggests that like a fig tree whose trunk is narrow but spreads out above, so Jerusalem in the future will rise and spread out. Indeed \u201cresting place\u201d may refer to Jerusalem, for God says: \u201cThis is My resting place for all time\u201d (Psalms 132:14). Rabbi Yudah challenged Rabbi Nehemiah: If you say that Jerusalem will extend to Damascus, how do you understand: \u201cThe city shall be rebuilt on her own mound\u201d (Jeremiah 32:18)? Rabbi Nehemiah explained that Jerusalem will not be moved from its place, but rather it shall spread out in all directions, not only in length and breadth, but also in height. We know this from Ezekiel\u2019s description of the future Temple: \u201cThe temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway went up from the lowest floor to the top floor\u2026\u201d (Ezekiel 41:7).\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov added: Indeed, in the future Jerusalem will keep rising until it reaches God\u2019s Throne of Glory. Rabbi Levi exclaimed: But you still do not know the full extent of Jerusalem\u2019s future glory! For it is written: \u201cI Myself \u2013 declares the Lord \u2013 will be a wall of fire all around it, and I will be the glory within it\u201d (Zech. 2:9). From here you know the future glory of Jerusalem!<\/span><\/p>\n
