In Job, this translation renders the term as \u201cthe Adversary,\u201d but \u201caccuser\u201d would also work here to pick up the link with the cognate verb at the end of this sentence. The Accuser, a kind of prosecuting attorney who belongs to the divine entourage (\u201cthe sons of God\u201d in Job), carries out the task of calling attention to the sundry trespasses of the people, but now he is rebuked because God is ready to remove the guilt of the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W.
