  1. Who\u2019s missing<\/em>? \u201cThe angel who spoke with me\u201d who accompanied the visions of the\u00a0 previous chapters and will return in the coming ones is missing here. Why? Commentators and scholars have different theories.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Forgiveness, not acquittal<\/em>. Joshua\u2019s trial ended before it began, but the priest\u2019s filthy clothes teach us that he\u2019s in a bad way. Remember – he\u2019s not a sanitation worker, he\u2019s a priest, for whom purity is part of his job description, such that the state of his clothes is a symbol of deep guilt.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Clothes make the man<\/em>. Or at least, in biblical argot, signify his position. A change of clothes is not just a matter of wardrobe, or personal cleanliness for Joshua, but a new appointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. A True Branch<\/em> (<\/span>Tzemach<\/span><\/em>). 130 chapters ago, Jeremiah prophesied regarding a leader named Tzemach (\u201cBranch\u201d): \u201cSee, a time is coming\u2014declares the LORD\u2014when I will raise up a true branch of David\u2019s line. He shall reign as king and shall prosper, and he shall do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah shall be delivered and Israel shall dwell secure. And this is the name by which he shall be called: \u2018The LORD is our Vindicator\u2019\u201d (Jer 23:5). Who is this Tzemach about whom Zechariah is prophesying? Zerubbabel, of the house of David, who shares leadership with Joshua the High Priest? Or perhaps a different leader? What does the prophecy teach us about the status of Zerubbabel, and about his relationship with Joshua? Good questions…<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Keeps an eye out. Or seven<\/em>. \u201cA single stone with seven eyes\u201d is cryptic. Think about the components and the context. A stone is used in building. And seven – is a sared number.
