The end of the first chapter of Zechariah describes an interaction between the prophet and an angel. The angel describes the return to Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the Temple. The angel proclaims that God is returning to Jerusalem. Verse 16 “therefore says God I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy and my house will be rebuilt in it, and a plumb line will be stretched over it.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this emotional call to return to Jerusalem, there is this odd reference to a plumb line. One might expect trumpets and shofar blasts! What is this plumb line? A plumb line is a special measurement tool, mostly used to measure straight vertical lines. This is not the first time in the Twelve Prophets that we see an angel of God using a measuring tool. Back in Amos chapter 7, an angel appears to the prophet and carries a plumb line in its hand. There the angel is measuring the walls of Israel in order to measure the amount of destruction that will be unleashed against Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, centuries later, the prophet uses this very same image- an angel of God holding a plumb line. Only this time, the plumb line is not being used to measure destruction. Instead the plumb line is being used to measure the rebuilding of the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
