The first eight chapters of the Book of Zechariah preserve a collection of prophetic visions. Based on the superscriptions to Zechariah 1:1,7 and 7:1, these oracles began in the civil dates of October-November 520 BCE and ended in December 518 BCE.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our chapter begins: \u201cIn the eighth month of the second year of Darius, this word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo.\u201d The genealogical information provided allows this Zechariah to be identified with the Prophet mentioned in Ezra 5:1 and 6:14 and with the priest mentioned in Nehemiah 6:12,17. However, he is to be distinguished from the High Priest Zechariah ben Jehoiada who was stoned to death \u201cin the court of the house of the Lord\u201d according to 2 Chronicles 24:20-22 (compare NT Matthew 23:25, Luke 11:51). Our prophet Zechariah is also to be distinguished from other Biblical figures named Zechariah, an understandably popular name meaning \u201cthe Lord has remembered\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Tosefta Sotah 13:3: When the latter Prophets, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi died the Holy Spirit departed from the people of Israel, but they would still occasionally hear the Heavenly Voice (<\/span>Bat Qol)<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Talmud Eruvin 21a, Zechariah interpreted a number of statements made by Ezekiel. Maimonides (Yesodei HaTorah 7:3) elaborates that prophetic visions are experienced as metaphoric imagery. Though the Prophet himself immediately understands the meaning of the vision, they may remain enigmatic to others. This is particularly true of the fantastic visions seen by Ezekiel and by Zechariah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanhedrin 93a preserves a detailed interpretation of Zechariah\u2019s first vision (1:7-13, paralleled in his last vision, 6:1-8): \u201cIn the night, I had a vision. I saw a man, mounted on a red horse, standing among the myrtles in the Deep<\/span>, and behind him were red, sorrel (<\/span>seruqim<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and white horses\u201d (1:8). \u201cIn the night\u201d suggests that God planned to turn the whole world into night. \u201cA man mounted\u201d refers to God, as it says: \u201cMan\u201d here refers to God, as it is written: \u201cThe Lord is a man of war\u201d (Exodus 15:3). \u201cOn a red horse\u201d suggests that God intended to turn the whole world into blood. But \u201cstanding among the myrtles (<\/span>ha-hadassim)<\/span><\/em>\u201d indicates that God\u2019s destructive intentions were eventually appeased by the righteous, like Esther, who was also named <\/span>Hadassah<\/em> <\/span>(see Esther 2:7)<\/span>. <\/span><\/i>And finally, the angry colored red and sorrel horses turned to the calm color of white!<\/span><\/p>\n
