  1. Haggai and Zechariah.<\/em> Haggai and Zechariah were active in the same period, and the book of Ezra (which we will encounter in another 295 chapters – ch 5) mention them together as being a factor in the rebuilding of the Temple. The prophecy of Haggai, which we have already read, fits Ezra\u2019s definition perfectly; in Zechariah we will see some additional themes.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Fathers and sons<\/em>. The intergenerational connection and its significance are a worrisome problem in the context of reward and punishment, destruction and redemption. Will the next generation continue to pay the price of the sins of the previous generation? If so, there is no hope, no reason for repentance, and no trust in consolation. Ezekiel answered this: \u201cThe person who sins, only he shall die\u201d (18:4). And Zechariah says, the anger is over: \u201c Turn back to me\u2014says the LORD of Hosts,\u201d and then – \u201cI will turn back to you\u2014said the LORD of Hosts\u201d (1:3).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A scroll of visions<\/em>. The vision of horses in our chapter opens a series of visions that will last until the middle of chapter 6. Stay tuned…<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Horses, myrtles, colors and messages<\/em>. The vision is a riddle, and the explanation that follows it only clarifies that the horses have returned from an excursion. But why horses – and why are they colorful? And why are they in \u201cthe myrtles in the Deep\u201d? Curious? Check out the commentators.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. 70 years<\/em>. The angel in verse 12 protests that for some 70 years, God has been angry and has not shown mercy to Jerusalem. In the background there is the prophecy of 70 years of Jeremiah: \u201cFor thus said the LORD: When Babylon\u2019s seventy years are over, I will take note of you, and I will fulfill to you My promise of favor\u2014to bring you back to this place\u201d (Jer. 29:10). The destruction of Jerusalem occurred in 586 BCE. Zechariah is prophesying in the year 520 BCE. The 70th<\/span> year is approaching: if the redemption is nigh, if the prophecies of the \u201cend of days\u201d are about to become fulfilled, then why is \u201call the earth dwelling in tranquility\u201d?
