This chapter records the words that Haggai was instructed to speak to Zerubbabel, the \u201cpolitical\u201d leader of the people, and to Joshua, their \u201creligious \u201c leader, on the 21<\/span>st<\/span> day of the 7<\/span>th<\/span> month\u2014which would be 21 Tishrei, the day we call Hoshanah Rabba. They were: \u201cWho is there left among you who saw this House in its former splendor? How does it look to you now? It must seem like nothing to you\u201d (3). In other words, the prevailing view was that if nothing could equal the splendor of the First Temple, perhaps there was no purpose in the rebuilding? Therefore, Haggai hastened to reassure them that\u2014with God\u2019s help, and with His promise \u201cto fill this House with glory\u201d (7)\u2014\u201cThe glory of this latter House will be greater than that of the first\u201d (9).<\/span><\/p>\n

Just what was the \u201cgreater glory\u201d? Rashi reported that the Amoraic sages Rav and Shmuel were split on the subject: \u201cOne said [greater] in size, the other said [greater] in years. The First Temple stood 410 years and the Second Temple stood 420 years.\u201d Eliezer of Beaugency seems to have sided with the greater size, writing: \u201cWhen built [up] by Herod, it would be greater than the First Temple was at the time of its destruction.\u201d This accords with the midrashic statement, \u201cWhoever did not see the Temple in its glory, never saw a beautiful building. Abbaye (some say R. Hisda) said: That is the [Temple] built by Herod\u201d (Yalkut Shim`oni), while Ibn Ezra and Radak attribute the same sentiment to \u201cYosef ben Gurion,\u201d i.e., Josephus Flavius.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim, however, drew this keen distinction:<\/span><\/p>\n

[The continuation of the verse:] \u201cIn this place, I will grant peace,\u201d is a condition. If a different spirit sets in, if they implement the covenant they made at the time of the exodus from Egypt; then this would be the last Temple, with none thereafter, and it would be greater than the first one. When the condition was not met\u2014as they did not keep the covenant, and there was no peace because of the multiplicity of violators and sects and baseless hatred\u2014the promise was unfulfilled at that time, until the final Temple will be built in the final days when all the promises will be fulfilled.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":79041,"id":79041,"title":"Hag2-bigger
