Our chapter, like chapter 1 of Haggai, begins with a detailed superscription: \u201cOn the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai\u201d (2:1). The date of the prophecy can be converted to the civil date October 17, 520 BCE. By this time the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem had apparently begun in earnest, however with initially disappointing results. This is reflected in Haggai\u2019s ultimately reassuring remarks:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho is there left among you who saw this House in its former splendor? How does it look to you now? It must seem like nothing to you. But be strong\u2026For I am with you\u2014says the Lord of Hosts\u2026I will fill this House with glory, said the Lord of Hosts. Silver is Mine and gold is Mine\u2014says the Lord of Hosts. The glory of this latter House shall be greater than that of the former one, said the Lord of Hosts; and in this place I will grant prosperity\u2014declares the Lord of Hosts\u201d (verses 3-9).<\/span><\/p>\n

God\u2019s declaration \u201csilver and gold is Mine\u201d reverberates throughout rabbinic tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mishnah Avot 6:9 relates that Rabbi Yose ben Kisma (who lived in Caesarea in the 1<\/span>st<\/span> \u2013 2<\/span>nd<\/span> century CE) said: \u2018Once a man asked me, Rabbi, where are you from?\u2019 I said to him, \u2018I am from a great city of sages and scribes.\u2019 He said to me, \u2018Rabbi, if you will come to live with us in our place, I will give you a million denarii of gold, precious stones and pearls.\u2019 I replied, \u2018my son, even if you were to give me all the silver, gold, precious stones and pearls in the world, I would not dwell anywhere except in a place of Torah. For when a man dies there accompany him neither gold, nor silver, nor precious stones nor pearls, but only Torah learning and good deeds, as it says: \u201cI prefer the teaching You proclaimed to thousands of gold and silver pieces\u201d (Psalms 119:72). And it says: \u201cSilver is Mine and gold is Mine\u2014says the Lord of Hosts\u201d (Haggai 2:8).\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

The Talmud records that Rabbi Meir (2<\/span>nd<\/span> century CE) instructed that one should always teach one\u2019s son a clean and undemanding occupation. And he should seek mercy from Him to Whom all wealth and property belong. For neither poverty nor wealth comes from one’s occupation, but rather from Him to whom all wealth and property belong, as it says: \u201cSilver is Mine and gold is Mine\u2014says the Lord of Hosts\u201d (Haggai 2:8).<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cminor\u201d Talmudic Tractate Derekh Eretz Zuta (4:3) instructs those learned in Torah to teach for free: Do not exact payment for teaching. For God has given His Torah to you for free. Indeed, one who demands payment for teaching Torah destroys the whole world! But remember that all wealth ultimately comes from God, as it is written: \u201cSilver is Mine and gold is Mine\u2014says the Lord of Hosts\u201d (Haggai 2:8).<\/span><\/p>\n
