  1. A matter or time (I).<\/em> The prophecies of Haggai are from the year 520 BCE. It is the time of the return to Zion. 18 years previously, in the year 538 BCE, the Declaration of Cyrus was promulgated, which allowed the exiles to return from Babylonia to Judah, and to begin rebuilding the Temple. Thus began the first wave of immigration. In another 295 chapters, we will read in Ezra (ch. 3) that those first immigrants laid the foundations for the Second Temple in the days of Cyrus, but the building stopped, and thus Haggai came to get things moving. The construction will be completed in the 516 BCE.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. A matter or time (II).<\/em> The book of Haggai is very orderly, with each prophecy having a clear date, including the year of the kings reign, month and even day. In verse 15, there\u2019s a date left hanging – with no prophecy or story. A problem of transmission? Hidden meaning?   3. Leaders with <\/span>yiches<\/span><\/em>. <\/em>Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, is the grandson of the King Jehoiachin (who had been exiled 67 years previously, from Jerusalem), and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, was the grandson of Seraya, the high priest during the exile of Jehoiachin.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. A new prophet for a new House<\/em>. Haggai\u2019s focus on building the Temple, as a basic key to the success of the national project, is an innovation compared with what we were used to hearing from the prophets of the First Temple, who all criticized the flaws of the Temple. The attention and positive response of the people is also surprising, compared to the behavior of the people and its leaders from the days of the First
