The opening verses of chapter 3 of Zephaniah likens the leadership of Jerusalem to various predatory animals: \u201cThe officials within her are roaring lions; Her judges are wolves of the steppe.” The image evokes a treacherous walk through the forest where the people must look both ways for fear of being attacked by their very leaders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The end of the chapter, in verse 13, Zephaniah returns to this animal imagery in his promise of a better future. “The remnant of Israel will not commit corruption, they will not speak falsehood… for they will graze and lie down with none to make them afraid.”\u00a0 The remaining people will be calm and peaceful like the sheep and goats that peacefully graze in the fields. Gone are the corrupt predatory animals that lead the people. Zephaniah’s prophecy also evokes Isiah’s prophecy centuries earlier, Isaiah 65:25: “The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.” The wolf and lion are the two animals that Zephaniah mentions. He also references the idea of grazing and lying down. Zephaniah takes Isaiah’s external prophecy about the enemies of Israel, and uses it to shine a light on the internal corruption of the leadership of Jerusalem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
