Our chapter is divisible into five sections: 1-3, a summons to the wicked of Judah to repent and to the righteous to remain steadfast; 4-7, a future Judean conquest of Philistia; 8-11, their subsequent conquest of Ammon and Moab; 12, the conquest of Nubia\u2014far to the south; and 13-15, the conquest of Nineveh\u2014to the north.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two things struck me as I read v.4: \u201cIndeed, Gaza shall be deserted, and Ashkelon desolate; Ashdod\u2019s people shall be expelled in broad daylight, and Ekron shall be uprooted.\u201d First, I was struck by the plays on words that both open (`<\/span>azah `azuvah<\/span><\/i>) and close (`<\/span>ekron te`aker<\/span><\/i>) the verse. Second, I was struck by the fact that only four of the five Philistine cities are mentioned. The Philistines were organized into a pentapolis consisting (alphabetically\u2014in Hebrew) of Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gat, Gaza, and Ekron, and there are explicit references to \u201cthe five Philistine officers\u201d in the books of Joshua (13:3), Judges (3:3), and 1 Samuel (6:4,16). The anomalous absence of Gat from our verse invited comment.<\/span><\/p>\n

It turns out that Radak anticipated these observations, writing:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGaza will be deserted\u201d: This is a form of flowery prose utilizing paronomasia, even though not all the letters match\u2026 \u201cEkron shall be uprooted\u201d: Paronomasia with a literary flourish. Gat was not mentioned because it was [already] in the hands of the Judean monarchy.<\/span><\/p>\n

I assume that he was alluding to 1 Chronicles 18:1: \u201cDavid struck at the Philistines, taking Gat and its suburbs from them.\u201d Alternately, he was referring to 2 Chronicles 26:6, which informs us that King Uzziah \u201cbreached the walls of Gat,\u201d although that same verse also notes his breach of Ashdod, so it is likely that any of the Philistine cities may have seesawed between indigenous and Judean control throughout the entire monarchic period.<\/span><\/p>\n
