  1. From the universal to the particular<\/em>. The first two chapters of the book of Habakkuk had a distinctly universal tone. The psalm in this chapter has more of a national focus, especially verse 13. This is one of the reasons that the connection between this chapter and the rest of the book is challenging for commentators and scholars.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Though angry, may you remember compassion.<\/em> This phrase, from verse 2 (<\/span>berogez rachem tizkor<\/span><\/em>) <\/span><\/i>has made it into the siddur. There it is a plea to remember mercy at a time of divine displeasure. The phrase in its original context here, though, has other interpretations (see the traditional commentators).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Revelation per se<\/em>. The memory of the revelation at Sinai (verses 2-7) doesn\u2019t connect to the covenant or the Torah. The revelation itself communicates the message of God who is present in the world, and is actively involved in reality. And this revelation connects to the shared past of God and Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. I heard you<\/em>! The psalm contrasts the two different \u201chearings\u201d of the prophet. <\/span>Shama\u2019ti shim\u2019acha<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>\u201cI have heard of your renown\u201d (verse 2 and following), of what God has done in the past. And \u201cI heard and my bowels quaked\u201d (verse 16) – about the travails of the people in the present. Without saying too much, it\u2019s clear what the prophet is hoping to hear re the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Body and soul<\/em>. Look what hearing God does to the physical state of Habakkuk\u2019s body: \u201cI heard and my bowels quaked, My lips quivered at the sound; Rot entered into my bone, I trembled where I stood\u201d (verse 16). Ouch. It\u2019s a good thing that the book doesn\u2019t end on this note; that he makes an effort to leave us with a more positive message: \u201cYet will I rejoice in the LORD, Exult in the God who delivers me.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Chazak<\/em>!
