If it is derived from the verbal root H-B-K, it would appear to signify one who was embraced—either physically (by parents?) or spiritually (by God?). Others relate it to the Assyrian ḫambaḳûḳu, which is the name of a plant. As we have noted in our introductory remarks to both Joel and Nahum, according to Seder Olam, the tannaitic record of Jewish history, Habakkuk, along with Joel and Nahum, prophesied during the reign of King Manasseh (697-643 BCE), whose name was not mentioned explicitly due to his evildoing.

The subjects of Habakkuk’s prophecies are the imminent rise of Babylon, its eventual conquest and destruction of Judah, and the latter’s ultimate salvation and redemption—each occupying one of the book’s three chapters. Prophecies about Babylon and Judah were uttered previously by Isaiah and Micah, and would be repeated later by Nahum, Zephaniah and Jeremiah; yet Habakkuk appears to predate Nahum since the Babylonian conquest of Nineveh was still unanticipated.

In Chapter 1, Habakkuk complained to God about the arrogance of the Babylonians, who attributed their success to themselves and their deities, failing to recognize that they were merely tools in God’s plan.

Kings they hold in derision, and princes are a joke to them; they laugh at every fortress, they pile up earth and capture it.
