  1. The poetry of conquest<\/em>. The prose poem of verses 2-3 brings a concise and powerful description of the conquering army, and the progress of battle. The poem consists of verbless descriptions, with their own galloping\u00a0 rhythm: \u201cCrack of whip And rattle of wheel, Galloping steed And bounding chariot!Charging horsemen, Flashing swords, And glittering spears! Hosts of slain And heaps of corpses.\u201d (Each of the Hebrew images is a two-word couplet).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The precedent of No-Amon<\/em>. The conquest of No-amon, the capital of the Egyptian empire, was well-known to the Assyrian empire, because they had supported it, in the days of Ashurbanipal, 663 BCE.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. That\u2019s how you build a wall<\/em>. The wall of Nineveh was made of stone, but the prophecy calls to strengthen it with bricks of mud or clay: \u201cStrengthen your forts; Tread the clay, Trample the mud, Grasp the brick mold!\u201d (verse 14). The mud mixture was kneaded with the feet, then poured into rectangular molds to make bricks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Friendless<\/em>. Verse 7 (and also 19) describe the loneliness of Nineveh in her downfall. No one is with her in her sorrow. \u201cWho will console her? Where shall I look for Anyone to comfort you?\u201d But she deserved being abandoned after years of ruling ruthlessly. Assyria\u2019s downfall is the best news that the region could be given.<\/span><\/li>\n
