  1. Good news!<\/em> The chapter opens with the picture of the herald \u201con the hills.\u201d Just like 155 chapters ago, in Isaiah 52:7- \u201cHow welcome on the mountain Are the footsteps of the herald Announcing happiness, Heralding good fortune, Announcing victory.\u201d Here\u2019s an assignment for the sharp-eyed: compare and contrast the two verses, their phrasings and contexts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. No more – ?<\/em>\u00a0From the point of view of the prophecy of Nahum, the downfall of Assyria is the final end of a destructive foreign power in Judah: \u201c Never again shall scoundrels invade you, They have totally vanished\u201d (verse 1). From the point of view of history, the rule of the Assyrian empire in Judah was swiftly replaced by the equally destructive Babylonian one.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Documented flooding.<\/em> Babylonian chronicles which tell of the conquest of Nineveh, describe a difficult three month period that ended in the month of Av. The Greek historians have a very wet version of events, and tell of heavy rains that led to the flooding of the Euphrates river (which actually isn\u2019t very appropriate at all for the summer months\u2026). A different ancient story of flooding that was preserved in documents from the time period, is connected to the conquest of Babylonia by the Assyrians, about 70 years earlier, when Sennacherib flooded the Euphrates after he conquered.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Listen to the voices<\/em>. The prophecy has quite a soundtrack, giving voice to many sounds. There is the herald of verse 1, the sound of the conquering army, the frenzied chariots rushing through the fields (verse 5), the sounds of the Assyrian women, lamenting, with \u201cthe voices of doves, beating their breasts\u201d (verse 8), and the voice of the messenger, that shall be heard no more (verse 14).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points
