  1. When?<\/em> The heading of the book lacks a date, but \u201cThe Book of the Prophecy of Nahum the Elkoshite\u201d refers to real world events: the downfall of Assyria and the destruction of Nineveh, which occurred in the year 612 BCE.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Selective quoting<\/em>. The divine attributes familiar from Exodus 34 are quoted in verses 2-3, with a clear slant towards justice. 8 chapters ago, Jonah quoted the same list, with a focus on\u00a0 mercy. Jonah was protesting the mercy and forgiveness that God showed the sinful Ninevites. Nahum is foretelling here the punishment and vengeance on those Ninevites.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n

  4. There is a precedent!<\/em> The Judans don\u2019t fear the Assyrians for nothing, and find it hard to believe that disaster is not coming from the north. In 701 BCE, Sennecharib king of Assyria almost destroyed Judah. There are those who understand verse 11 as Nahum\u2019s answer to those who fear.
