Micah warns Israel and Judah that their sins will lead to their destruction at the hands of Assyria and Babylon respectively. The book is broken up into four distinct oracles.<\/span><\/p>\n

First, we see an ironic re-enactment of Sinai, with God descending over the people, but this time rather than sealing a covenant, He is delivering the curses set out in that covenant to bear on his counterpart, Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second section we read Micah\u2019s condemnation of the leaders and prophets of Israel and Judah. The leaders are blamed for the nation’s corruption and for reducing their poor brethren to servitude and depriving them of their land. This resonates, because soon they will be reduced to servitude and deprived of their land while the poor will remain on their land, even after the exile.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the third section we have a complete eschatological account that sets up Israel\u2019s role as the enlightener of the world in the clearest terms in the Tanakh. Before giving us some details of the process that the ultimate redemption will take, the prophet encapsulates the purpose of the redemption. It is so that \u201cthe nations will come and say:\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Come, let us go up to the mountain of Yhvh,<\/span>
\n<\/span> to the house of the God of Jacob.<\/span>
\n<\/span> He will teach us His ways,<\/span>
\n<\/span> so that we may walk in His paths.\u2019<\/span>
\n<\/span> The law will go out from Zion,<\/span>
\n<\/span> the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the fourth section the ultimate redemption of Israel is tackled from a different angle, that of justice. Israel\u2019s history is recounted followed by its betrayal and its misery and suffering as a result of the judgment against it. In a final flourish, a personified Israel recognizes that the mercy of God is paramount and that redemption awaits even if undeserved, because of God\u2019s promise to the forefathers. God\u2019s truth and God\u2019s mercy become one. His promise was a device to guarantee that even an irredeemable Israel would still have to be redeemed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
