Unlike the hidden protection referenced by the Exodus story in chapter 6, in this chapter, God promises the wonders of the Exodus to shame the enemies of Israel. Playing off the miracles of the Exodus, Micah recounts the first miracle, that of the staff of Moses\u00a0 the Shepherd (verse 14 &#8220;Shepherd your people with Your staff, the flock of Your heritage&#8221;)\u00a0 that turns into the snake (verse 17- &#8220;they will lick the dirt like the snake&#8221;).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is clear from verse 17, the master poet Micah is not content with only one snake reference. The snake that licks the dirt also recalls the very first snake mentioned in the Bible &#8211; the snake in the Garden of Eden. That snake is cursed to eat the dust all the days of its life (Genesis 3:14). The snake is cursed for tricking Eve into eating the fruit off the tree of life. The implication here is that God realizes the effect that the other nations had on the people. They had infected their lives and &#8220;tricked&#8221; them into behavior that angered God.
