The image of a lion has come up multiple times in our study of the twelve prophets. Hosea likens God to a lion who will tear up the people and roar out (Hosea 5:14, 11:10, 13:7-8). Amos also uses the image to evoke fear of God (Amos 3:8, 3:12, 5:19). Micah takes this image and flips it. Unlike his predecessors, this time the lion is not used as an image of destruction or fear. The lion does not depict the enemies of the Israelites or the vengeance of God against the people. This time the lion is the people themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To the people of Judah the lion is an ever present image. Judah himself is likened to a lion in Genesis 49:9 “Judah is a lion\u2019s whelp; On prey, my son, have you grown. He crouches, lies down like a lion, Like the king of beasts\u2014who dare rouse him?” The standard of the tribe of Judah according to many commentators includes the image of a lion. The earlier prophets deliberately use this image of a lion and twist it to become the enemy of the people. Micah, in his words of consolation, takes back the image. Though the people will be in exile, they will regain their lion strength. They will tear apart their enemies and return to their former glory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
