Our chapter presents a sharp turn from Micah\u2019s preceding prophecies of doom and destruction to oracles of peace and security, which begin: \u201cIn the days to come, the Mount of the Lord\u2019s House shall stand firm above the mountains. And it shall tower above the hills. The peoples shall gaze on it with joy\u2026\u201d (4:1). Significantly, Micah 4:1-3 are found also in Isaiah 2:2-4.<\/span><\/p>\n

The opening verse, and its parallel in Isaiah Chapter 2, play a key role in a rabbinic discourse on Jerusalem at the End of Days, preserved in Midrash Tehillim 36:6, 87:4 and in Pesiqta de-Rav Kahana, <\/span>Qumi Ori<\/span><\/i> (21:4). \u201cRabbi Pinchas said in the name of Rabbi Reuven: In the future the Holy One will bring the mountains of Sinai, Tabor and Carmel together to build the Temple on their combined summits! What is the prooftext? \u201cIn the days to come, the Mount of the Lord\u2019s House shall stand firm above the mountains\u201d (Isaiah 2:2). Rabbi Chanina\u2019 said: And even more so,\u00a0<\/span>the Temple will sing, and the mountains will sing back in answer. And what is the prooftext? \u201cIn the days to come, the Mount of the Lord\u2019s House\u2026 shall tower above (<\/span>nissa\u2019<\/span><\/em>) the hills\u201d (Micah 4:1). But <\/span>nissa\u2019<\/span><\/em> may refer to song, as in: \u201cChenaniah, officer of the Levites in song (<\/span>massa\u2019<\/span><\/em>), he was in charge of the song (<\/span>massa\u2019<\/span><\/em>),because he was a master\u201d (I Chronicles 15:22). Rabbi Hoshaia said in the name of Rabbi Efes: In the future, Jerusalem will become a beacon [<\/span>ksilfns<\/span><\/em> \u2013 Greek <\/span>xylophanos<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>\u201cwooden torchlight] for the nations of the world and they will walk by its light. What is the prooftext: \u201cArise, shine, (<\/span>Kumi Ori<\/span><\/em>) for your light has dawned\u2026And nations shall walk by your light\u201d (Isaiah 60:1-3).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alternatively, it has been suggested that the underlying Greek word was <\/span>kolososphanos<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 a colossal lighthouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such an impressive lighthouse was one of the \u201cSeven Wonders of the Ancient World\u201d — the Lighthouse (<\/span>Pharos<\/span><\/em>) of Alexandria, which was erected in the 3<\/span>rd<\/span> century BCE and parts of which were still to be seen until 1480 CE. This amazing building was at its time one of the tallest man-made structures in the world, rising to a height of approximately 100 meters. Light to help guide ships into port was produced at the top of this ancient towering lighthouse by a mirror which reflected sunlight during the day and a fire that was lit at night. In modern times, remains of the Lighthouse of Alexandria were discovered by marine archaeologists on the floor of Alexandria’s Eastern Harbor. There are plans to replace it there with a modern skyscraper.<\/span><\/p>\n
