Micah begins with a vision of the resplendent rebuilt Temple (v. 1), which becomes the center for the nations of the world to make a pilgrimage to, to learn God’s Torah. The learning leads to an outbreak of justice – causes are judged, conflicts are resolved. With conflicts disappearing, weapons will be transformed into useful implements. Micah promises that every individual will enjoy both prosperity and security, and the people respond with a declaration of faith. Micah concludes the speech with a description of the ingathering and the healing transformation of the Jewish people from exiles to a proud, sovereign nation.

With war a memory, Micah sketches what an ancient rural farmer would have declared to be “his middle-class dream” – to relax underneath his vine and his fig tree. This highlights the economic implications of world peace, with the freedom from the crippling economic burden of war. Noting the switch, Malbim suggests that this verse in the reclamation of the ideal situation that the greedy wealthy aided by a corrupt leadership had destroyed in chapters 2 and 3. With economic justice, peace can reign. Agricultural abundance is one of the primary promises that God made about the land of Israel: “For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with streams and springs and fountains issuing from plain and hill; a land of wheat and barley, of vines, figs, and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey” (Deut. 7:7-8).

The beautiful imagery of fig trees and vines reflects Micah’s rural roots. But whose imagery did Micah adopt? The image first appeared in the book of Kings description of the idyllic situation that the Jewish people enjoyed under the reign of King Solomon: “All the days of Solomon, Judah and Israel from Dan to Beersheba dwelt in safety, everyone under his own vine and under his own fig tree.” Likewise, Rabshakeh, Sennacherib’s royal messenger, spoke directly to the people of Jerusalem and promised them that if they surrendered to Assyria, every one of them would be able to “eat of his own vine and his own fig tree” (2 Kings 18:31). Given Assyria’s treatment of Judah’s captives, it is unlikely that Rabshakeh’s promises were meant to be taken seriously.

However, Micah here is claiming that this is the ultimate goal not only for Judah but for all of humanity. Once Jerusalem is raised, it will, in turn, raise all the nations of the world, and everyone will enjoy such a blessing. Ultimately, the fig tree and the vine and all the prosperity that it entails is left for the future: “On that day, says the Lord of Hosts, you shall call-each man to his neighbor-to come under his vine and his fig tree” (Zech. 3:10).

mic4-moving the
