1 Kings 5:1-14 contains a vivid description of the glory of the reign of King Solomon, which was characterized by wealth, wisdom, and tranquility. Particularly telling is v.5: \u201cJudah and Israel resided peacefully, each under his vine or fig tree, from Dan to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.\u201d In our present chapter, Micah prophesied that \u201cin the days to come\u201d (1), when \u201cinstruction comes forth from Zion\u201d (2) and \u201cnation shall not lift up sword against nation\u201d (3), \u201cevery man shall sit under his grapevine or fig tree with no one to disturb him\u201d (4).<\/span><\/p>\n

The grape and the fig are two of the seven species with which the Land of Israel is singularly blessed (Deut. 8:8). While grapes and wine are lauded throughout the Bible, ancient Near Eastern, and classical literature, less has been said about figs. Several observations on figs drawn largely from biblical exegetical literature can restore some equilibrium.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fig will not ripen, nor will the vine yield its fruit\u201d (Habakuk 3:17). Ibn Ezra commented:<\/span><\/p>\n

The verse mentions everything that improves the blood and on which man can live. Figs are mentioned because moist figs\u2014and even dried ones\u2014produce a lot of blood which is necessary for life. However, grapes and fruits\u2014such as nuts, almonds, pomegranates, and apples\u2014do not produce blood\u2026 but olive oil, in which vegetables should be cooked, does produce blood.<\/span><\/p>\n

This dietary advice was echoed by Maimonides: \u201c<\/span>Figs, grapes and almonds are always beneficial, both fresh and dried. One may eat of them as much as he requires. However, he should not eat them constantly even though they are the most beneficial of fruits\u201d<\/span> (Hilkhot De`ot 4:11).<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, Proverbs 27:18 states: \u201cWhoever guards the fig-tree shall eat the fruit thereof; and he that waits on his master shall be honored.\u201d Malbim\u2019s commentary explains both the maxim and its analogy:<\/span><\/p>\n

Whoever wants to eat the fruit of the fig tree has to guard it\u2026 because the figs ripen one at a time and they need to be harvested each morning before sunrise lest the ripe fruits get wormy\u2026 Therefore, \u201cone who waits on his master\u201d must attend him every morning to gather the fruits of his wisdom, as it says of Joshua that \u201che never left the tent [of
