This chapter is divisible into three equal parts of 4 verses. Each segment begins with a description of a sin and follows with its consequences. The first one (1-4) concerns the officers and leaders whose punishment is that God will ignore them. The second (5-7) involves the false prophets, from whom the ability to prophesy will be withheld. This is followed by a self-descriptive verse (8) that distinguishes Micah from them. The third (9-12) is directed towards three types of leaders whose punishment will be commensurate with their crimes. Since they built Jerusalem through corruption, it will be desolate, and because they imagine that God is with them, the Temple mount, His residence, will be abandoned.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the first segment, Micah leveled a most bizarre accusation, comparing their wanton treatment of the poor to cannibalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who hate the good, and love the evil; who rob their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones. Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones; yea, they chop them in pieces, as that which is in the pot, and as flesh within the caldron. (2-3)<\/span><\/p>\n

Rashi and Kara expanded on the literal sense, explaining that they \u201cbreak their bones\u201d in order to remove the marrow from within, while Radak added that \u201call this is to magnify the evil they perpetrate against the poor and defenseless.\u201d And Malbim elaborated:<\/span><\/p>\n

After they have eaten My people\u2019s flesh and stripped their skin off and there is nothing more to steal from them because they have already despoiled them completely, then they break their bones\u2014they open them to search for marrow within. They also break the bones in half as one chops meat into a small pot by breaking the bones, resembling meat in a boiling cauldron to remove all their marrow. This is how they oppress the poor\u2014their property and their bodies\u2014until their souls are
