  1. Now that\u2019s how you mourn<\/em>. The grief of the prophets over the loss of their gift of prophecy looks like this: \u201cThe seers shall be shamed And the diviners confounded; They shall cover their upper lips, Because no response comes from God\u201d (verse 7). Covering the face to the upper lip was a prevailing mourning custom. We have actually seen it before, 59 chapters ago, when Ezekiel was forbidden to act thus on the death of his wife (Ezek. 24).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Peace and security<\/em>. That apparently was the atmosphere in fortified Jerusalem. The feeling of security flowed from their belief in the rightness of their ways: \u201cThey rely upon the LORD, saying, \u201cThe LORD is in our midst; No calamity shall overtake us\u201d (verse 11). If this prophecy represents the time period after Hezekiah\u2019s religious reforms, then it seems reasonable that the purified Temple worship was seen as an insurance policy. It would allow the leaders to close their ears and their eyes to the social reality that Micah is protesting.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A pioneer of prophecy<\/em>. Micah is the first to dare to prophecy regarding the destruction of the Temple. If you read the books in their literary order, his prophecies may seem almost banal. But he was the first in history, and to prophecy about the destruction of the House of God, you need courage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Legal precedent.<\/em> Micah\u2019s prophecy is a legal precedent that in about a hundred years time will save Jeremiah from being executed. Jeremiah, who prophesied in the Temple courtyard regarding its destruction because of the sinful nation, was almost put to death for his seditious words. It\u2019s fortunate that: \u201cSome of the elders of the land arose and said to the entire assemblage of the people, Micah the Morashtite, who prophesied in the days of King Hezekiah of Judah, said to all the people of Judah: \u2018Thus said the LORD of Hosts: Zion shall be plowed as a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins And the Temple Mount a shrine in the woods.\u2019 \u201cDid King Hezekiah of Judah, and all Judah, put him to death? Did he not rather fear the LORD and implore the LORD, so that the LORD renounced the punishment He had decreed against them? (Jer. 26:17-19).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
