  1. Ancestral lands<\/em>, not just any property<\/em>. In the social order during the time of the Tanach, a person who was heir to an allotment of land was independent. Someone without such an estate would have been forced to be a hired hand, or worse, a slave. Micah is not speaking to a bunch of scofflaws or robbers. He is protesting a new social order that allows the wealthier to increase their riches at the expense of the middle class and the poorer strata. How? Details to come in the following chapters.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. A family matter<\/em>. In verse 3 Israel is called \u201cthis clan\u201d (in Hebrew, <\/span>mishpachah<\/span><\/em>). What does this epithet add? Critiquing Israel for lacking familial solidarity? Pointing the finger of blame at certain families? The possibilities ar intriguing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Cold comfort?<\/em> What is a prophecy of comfort doing in the chapter (the images in verse 12-13)? Balancing out the foreboding? Could it be a false prophecy of Micah\u2019s opponents? Or perhaps it isn\u2019t even a prophecy of consolation. See commentators for more.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Against the historical background.<\/em> What\u2019s going on in Judah during the time that Micah is prophesying? The preparations to fight against Sennecharib and the Assyrians place a heavy economic and military burden on the people. Verse 8 hints at the idea that the ones who were drafted may have lost their property in their absence, to the wealthier ones who stayed home: \u201cYou strip the mantle with the cloak Off such as pass unsuspecting, Who are turned away from war.\u201d And why are there those who think that all is well, and that the people don\u2019t deserve any upcoming disasters (Sennecharib, for example)? Perhaps it is the religious reforms that Hezekiah implemented, that gave the people the feeling that they are serving God as they are meant
