Jonah chapter 4 has several references to the book of Genesis, Exodus, and Numbers:<\/span><\/p>\n

1) The last verse of chapter 3, which is thematically connected to the beginning of chapter four, states: “And God relented concerning the evil he had said he would bring upon them and he didn’t do it.” This language closely parallels the language in Exodus 32:14, when God forgives the people following the sin of the Golden Calf ” And God relented concerinng the evil he planned to bring upon his nation.”<\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0 In Verse 2, Jonah references the famous phrase of God’s forgiveness attributes that Moses recalls in Exodus 34:6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) In verse 5, Jonah makes himself a sukkah, a booth, to protect him from the sun. This sukkah, references the cloud of glory that God used to protect the Israelites in the desert. The story also parallels the story in Genesis 18:1, when God visits Abraham in the heat of the day outside his tent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) The east wind references in verse 8, also comes up in Genesis in the dreams of Joseph, as the wind that scorches the ears of grain (Genesis 41:23) and in Exodus as the wind that carries the locusts away (Exodus 10:14), and the wind that splits the sea (14:16).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5) In verse 8, Jonah pleads to God to kill him rather than allow him to be stuck in the sweltering heat. In Numbers chapter 11, the people complain (yet again) to Moses about the man.
