Jonah asks for the second and the third time to die (verses 3 and 8). The first time was during the storm when Jonah told the sailors to throw him into the sea. His willingness to die, and his anger “unto death” testify to how much this whole saga affects him. Truly.

Why did Jonah flee? Verse 2 explains. But even the explanation needs explaining. Why didn’t Jonah want God to have mercy on the Ninevites? There are those who say that Jonah was opposed specifically to the Ninevites receiving divine clemency because that would cause harm to Israel, either in the present, because their righteousness would put Israel’s sinfulness in a bad light, or in the future – since Nineveh was the capital of Assyira, which would go on to destroy Israel. Others say that Jonah opposed the idea of repentance in general where it is possible to sin and not pay the price. And there are other interpretations.

The 13 attributes. 448 chapters ago (Exodus 34), Moses was privileged to discover God’s characteristics in the world, known as the 13 attributes. But this isn’t the only comparison that Jonah needs to make. The fact that Jonah responded with the same intensity (fury and a wish to die) to the forgiveness to the Ninevites as to the plant which withered, should teach him that he has a serious problem of proportions and priorities.
