Because it appears to recall the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he\u1e25erish<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cto be silent,\u201d one understanding, which becomes ensconced in later literary Hebrew, is that it means \u201csilent\u201d here. But that scarcely accords with the present context because the wind&#8211;the hot wind called the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hamsin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that blows from the eastern desert&#8211;has an obviously devastating effect. The translation guesses, picking up a cue from some of the medieval Hebrew exegetes, that the adjective is related to the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u1e25arash<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cto plow\u201d and perhaps by extension \u201cto shear or cut through something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W.
