3:5 \u201cAnd the people of Nineveh trusted God, and they called a fast and donned sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That is, they trust God\u2019s word delivered by Jonah that they will be annihilated unless they turn back from their evil ways. This translation avoids the use of \u201cbelieve\u201d for the Hebrew term because the general meaning of this word in the Bible–as opposed to the postbiblical usage of <\/span>he\u2019emin<\/span><\/em>–suggests an act of trust, not belief. One should not imagine that the Ninevites have become monotheists, but rather that they have taken seriously the word of YHWH that He is prepared to destroy the city. The claim of some scholars that this verb when followed by the preposition <\/span>be<\/span><\/em>–<\/span><\/i> means \u201cbelieve\u201d does not stand up against analysis. The few cases where it occurs with this preposition are at best ambiguous, and in Micah 7:5, the usage is unambiguously a statement about trust, not belief: \u201cDo not trust in evil,\u201d and then in the poetic parallelism, \u201cnor place confidence (<\/span>tivte\u1e25u<\/span><\/em>) in a leader.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
