  1. 10 seconds on Nineveh<\/em>. Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian empire. It was built on the banks of the Tigris River, and housed many impressive palaces, libraries and temples.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. A great city unto God<\/em>. That\u2019s simply the way to say that Nineveh was humongous. But perhaps there is also a hint here at what God felt towards it (verse 3).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Sodom, in the background.<\/em> Jonah\u2019s call in verse 4 warns Nineveh of a fate similar to that of Sodom and Gomorrah. In chapter 1, there were already hints that Nineveh\u2019s situation was reminiscent of that of Sodom and Gomorrah on the eve of the destruction: \u201cfor their wickedness has come before Me\u201d (verse 2), like the outcry that came from the evils of Sodom in Gen. 18.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Ad absurdum<\/em>? The fast which the king decrees includes everyone: \u201cNo man or beast\u2014of flock or herd\u2014shall taste anything!\u201d (verse 7). How are the animals to blame? Good question. On the other hand, if Nineveh would be destroyed, the animals too wouldn\u2019t survive, so even if they are not morally culpable, it still might be a good idea to include them.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Who knows<\/em>? The energetic activity of the citizens of Nineveh is accompanied by hope, not certainty: \u201cWho knows but that God may turn and relent? He may turn back from His wrath, so that we do not perish.\u201d\u201d (verse 9).<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Is it real repentance<\/em>? That\u2019s the question. Did the residents of Nineveh really repent, or did they only do some superficial external actions to placate God\u2019s anger? Are they acting out of a genuine desire to repair their society – or out of fear? It is an ongoing argument among the commentators. What do you think?<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Jonah should be pleased<\/em>. His mission succeeded beyond anything expected. He should be happy. But what does he feel? What does he want now? Tomorrow.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
