Most of the chapter is taken up with the prayer that Jonah offers from within the fish. This prayer includes poetic verses in which the prophet describes how he felt and how he looked in this precarious situation: \u201cThe waters closed in over me. The deep engulfed me. Weeds twined around my head\u201d (2:6).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rabbinic Sages were particularly interested in what Jonah experienced during these three days in the belly of the great fish. Midrash Pirke de-Rabbi Eliezer, Chapter 10, relates that Jonah entered the mouth of the Great Fish like one enters the \u201cGreat Synagogue\u201d (In his translation, Friedlander suggests that this may refer to the Great Synagogue in Alexandria described in Talmud Bavli Sukkah 51a, like a huge basilica that\u00a0 sometimes held twice the number of people that went forth from Egypt). So, Jonah was able to stand upright there. The two eyes of the fish were like windows of glass giving light to Jonah. Rabbi Meir said that a luminous pearl was suspended inside the belly of the fish and it gave illumination to Jonah, and it showed to Jonah all that was in the sea and in the depths, as it is said, &#8220;Light is sown for the righteous&#8221; (Ps. 97:11).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Fish showed Jonah the mighty River of Oceanus, as it is said: &#8220;The River surrounded me&#8221; (Jonah 2:5). And it showed him the paths in the Reed Sea through which Israel passed. And it showed him the place from where the breakers of the sea and its billows flow, as it is said: &#8221; The floods engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows swept over me&#8221; (verse 4). And it showed him the pillars of the earth in its foundations, as it is said: &#8221; I sank to the base of the mountains. The bars of the earth closed upon me forever\u201d (verse 7). And it showed him Sheol, as it is said: &#8220;From the belly of Sheol I cried out\u201d (verse 2). And it showed him what was beneath the Temple, as it is said: &#8220;I will continue to gaze upon Your Holy Temple\u201d (verse 5)\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they were at the Temple, Jonah said to the fish: Stand where you are because I wish to pray. The fish stood still, and Jonah began to pray before the Holy One, blessed be He: Sovereign of all the Universe! You are called &#8220;the One who kills&#8221; and &#8220;the One who makes alive\u201d. Behold, my soul has reached unto death, now restore me to life. But Jonah was only answered when he said: &#8220;What I have vowed I will perform\u201d (verse 10). Immediately, the Holy One, blessed be He, signaled to the Great Fish and it spewed Jonah out as it is said: &#8221; The Lord commanded the fish, and it spewed Jonah out upon dry land\u201d (verse
