Nineveh had been the capital of the Assyrian empire since the time of Sennacherib and was already styled \u201ca great city\u201d in Genesis 10:12. According to Jonah 3:3, its size was \u201ca three-day walk,\u201d although it is not clear whether that was its diameter or circumference (Ibn Ezra), with a population in excess of 120,000 (4:11). Jonah demurred, choosing to board a ship in Jaffa headed to Tarshish, \u201caway from the service of the Lord\u201d (1:3), which, according to Sa`adya Gaon\u2014as explained in the Introduction\u2014meant avoiding an anticipated second mission after (implicitly) carrying out the first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Literally, God ordered Jonah to \u201crise up (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qum<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and go to Nineveh,\u201d a circumlocution that takes on additional significance when we note that Jonah\u2019s response was that he initially \u201crose up\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayaqom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in flight from God\u201d and \u201cwent down (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayered<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to Jaffa\u201d where he \u201cwent down\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayered<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) into the ship, and after the tempest began, he descended (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yarad<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) even further into it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God commanded him to rise up, but he kept going down until he reached the bottom of the ship, whence he was displaced and cast overboard (1:15) into an even greater depth, whereupon he was swallowed by \u201cthe great fish\u201d (2:1) taking him even further down. No wonder, then, that his prayer to God from within the belly of the fish compares his situation, metaphorically, to being \u201cin the belly of Sheol\u201d (a euphemism for Hell, 2:3), pleading: \u201cYou cast me into the depths\u201d (2:4), \u201cI descended to the base of the mountains\u201d (2:7).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, God had the fish spew Jonah out onto dry land (2:1) and renewed His instruction to \u201crise up (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qum<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and go to Nineveh\u201d (3:2). Jonah acquiesced and \u201crose up\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayaqom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and this time he remained
